FILAASMO
Filipino American Association in Southwest Missouri
The President’s Message
By Howard Redmon
December 3, 2011
There has been some progress in accomplishing the goals discussed in the FILAASMO newsletter of July 16, 2011. Tou communication efforts are raising awareness of problems we face but we still have much to do. The need for more active committee chairman, officers, and dues paying members is still acute. We are asking all who are on roster, (That’s you if you received an invitation to the Christmas Party), to join, sign up for a position of service and apply your skills to the improvement of FILAASMO.
FILAASMO was founded in 1974. It is now 37 years old. FILAASMO members come from three generations of Filpinos in SW Missouri. Planning for 2012 activatives will start soon. There may be questions about the membership and entrance fees we are collecting for the Christmas Party, so I will explain the reasons for them.
Membership: dues are the standard fare and vital for any successful volunteer organization. The leadership will need funds for supplies, postage, printing and communication expenses. We many want to set up a web site, prepare a newsletter, and maintain membership lists. We often need to pay venue rentals well in advance, order food, pay for kids’ treats and decorations. All our activities contribute to unity of purpose and shared experience in this new country. Forging friendships, developing business contacts, and church affiliations and nurturing our cultural heritage are all important.
We want to share our experience of parenthood, the Americanization of our teenagers, adjustment to our non-Filpino spouse and homesickness. Who better to learn from but those who have traveled this road before? So be part of this life blood of this organization!
Donating your time and talent: There are many members who donate needed items such as Lechon, drinks, items to be raffled and door prizes. These are often anonymous but make an important contribution to the enjoyment of our events. Many volunteers also entertain us by singing, dancing, and playing instruments. We have Master of Ceremonies, Santa, Karaoke, historians, clowns, and balloon artists. In short we have a place for those who are talented in many ways. Perhaps you would like to practice your skills with a supportive audience.
Many thanks to the officers, board members, and volunteers who worked hard and faithfully during 2011.
Sincerely,
Howard Redmon, President
